Jesse "Ray" Gunn, Jr. (1971)

Mike was a good friend and tons of laughs. I have great memories of Mike, Rick, Mrs. Campos and camping out in their back yard and all the turtles that Mr. Campos caught while fishing and they were all running around in the back yard. You are missed, my friend.

Gary Jones (1973)

Went to school with Mike and his brother Jeff--funny guys. Best remembered Mike as part of the Benning Hills sandlot football crowd (Ray Gunn, Mark Allen, Charlie Rouse, Buddy Harris, The Lampe brothers, Eugene Wright, Danny Tharp, Wayne Achey, Joey Farrell--so many more; with guest appearances by Craig Hrncir, Randy Achey, Eddie Hampton, Gary Brown and several others who ended up playing football at Baker. Mike was actually one of the better ones. I can still remember him scramblin' around with the ball and singing CCR at the same time.

Tak Lampe (1973)

He was practically my best friend. I remember those campouts Ray Gunn. Remember the "kitty incident"? His brothers 396 SS, he bought from Rick and we RODE in it. He could remember lyrics and play guitar, but could not handle school. He played basketball for year at Baker and coach wanted him to play football, but school was just too slow for him. His sport heroes were Pistol Pete, Archie Manning, Steve Carlton. Mike Camposs was trully gifted. He joined service however and they gave him GED.(they dont do that nowdays) He became medic and we made pact to stay alive so we could get old and talk bout old times, but he broke that pact by supposedly rode on back of bike without helmet and crashed. I wont divulge who was driving the bike. He did love CCR and he did start a band at one time. I loved that man and still miss him.

Marshall Ford-
I had no idea that Mike was gone until this evening. Jeff, Mike, Rick, and sister Linda(?) So so many memories. Of course all the pick-up games of basketball, football on the playgrounds of Benning Hills School. Most of my time spent with Mike was when he came up with the idea to form a band. So together with Paul"Buffy" Brown, Neal Gentry, and Robert Caulder, we did just that. Most days we practiced at my house, and yes CCR for hours. Mike sang it so well. From time to time we'd play at the Wed night Club House and of course we had to do more then CCR, so we Mastered Evil Ways (GFR) and House of the Rising Sun. It was good times. Mike and I stood side by side as we buried our friend Charlie Rouse. Mike was one of the most all around naturally talented athlets I ever saw. I morn his passing with a heavy heart, and have his family in my prayers.

Mike, you and your brothers and sister, were as much part of my family as I was to yours. I came to your house every morning to walk to school with Jeff. The camp outs at the Rod and Gun Club, Ricks SS, Trapping turtles, and your dad's turtle pond in the back yard, and of course, Credence as the backdrop for nearly everything we did together.

I cannot say how often your antics kept me in stitches, but you were one hell of a friend and neighbor. It seemed that your house was the congregation place for so many of us growing up back then, and indeed it was. It seemed that everyone from the hills hung out at the Campos' house on Davis St. For such a short little street at the bottom of the hill, You and your Family made life a bit more bearable for many of us.

Well, The Bad Moon may have rose, but you still shine.

Buddy "Charles" Harris (1974)

Tak Lampe just contacted me and told me about Mike.  It is sad to hear he is gone.  Reading some of the others has brought back a flood of memories.  Mike was the fast pitch pitcher for Benning Hills he was the only one that did not have a windmill windup but he could still throw it fast.  I think Tak was the catcher.  In city championship I got cleated and had to get 60 stitches in my leg.  Charlie Overby took me to the hospital.  I tagged the guy out but we lost the city championship. Archie Manning and CCR -- Long as I remember... We had some great times in them there "Hills" I am truly sorry I have lost contact with so many from there. Mike you are missed.
