Vincent Franklin Melillo - Class Of 1974 VIEW PROFILE

Vincent Franklin Melillo

Vincent Franklin Melillo, Baker Class of ‘74, was my baby brother.  He died unexpectedly at age 40 January 10, 1997, in Columbus, Ga., and is missed every day by our Dad, Vincent Melillo, 91, and me.  Vincent’s big blue eyes and smile could “light up a room.”  He was the “sunshine” in our lives,  and kept us entertained with his little pranks.   He was an uncle, who also acted as an older brother to my son, Michael Clasen.  Our mother, Frankie Doris Thompson Melillo, died in 2005 without ever recovering from his loss.
Although my brother and I were born to a military family, Vincent was pretty much a “hometown boy” who did all his “moving around” by the time he was four years old.  Our Dad, a WW II Merrill’s Marauder and Korean War -- 5th RCT veteran, retired as an Army master sergeant after 21 years so he wouldn’t have to spend time away from his young son.  I was the 10 years older “Army Brat sister” who finished high school at Baker - class of “64.”
Vincent was born July 14, 1956, at Ft. Polk, La., and lived at Ft. Knox  before moving to Columbus.  He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Baker High School.   He received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Columbus College, and also attended the University of Georgia.  He was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity.
Most of his professional life was in the retail business. He managed Hanover Shoes at Peachtree Mall until it closed, and was working at Montgomery Wards at the time of his death.  He had been involved with the South Columbus Boy’s Club and American Red Cross at Ft. Benning. He enjoyed SCUBA, martial arts and photography. Vincent was divorced.  His former wife, now Tammy Pope, and her family are still a part of our lives. Vincent is buried in his mother’s hometown of Milan, Ga.

I was sadden when I read about the passing of Vincent. Although I did not know him that well, he was always nice to me when we met in the halls of BHS. Recently I have communicated with his sister Jonnie and I hope to learn more about Vincent in the near future. I regret I did not have the opportunity to get him know him better. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

Johnnie,
Maybe you do not remember me, but I do you. I am sorry that you lost a brother at such a young age. My husband also lost his brother at 43.
I remember you coming into Baker when you were a sophmore, I believe, maybe a freshman and you tried out for cheerleader. You were not known real well, but you sure could cheer. You got to do something I wanted to so, but I was not popular enough at Baker, and was definitly not as impressive as you were.
Let me know if you get this.
Gloria Taccati Nichols.

I remember Vincent and he was one who was full of life. He was in my ROTC Platoon and I often went to his house after school. He possessed a driven personality, in spite of his occasional antics. It was clear he would find success in his life, even back then. I always knew I could count on him to keep his guys in check, and he did.

I don't remember exactly when I befriended Vince.  I do remember one time that he and I drove (in his Triumph) at breakneck speed to the "Little Grand Canyon" to watch meteors enter the atmosphere (away from the lights of Columbus).  Ah, so many years ago. He will be watching as his father receives his special induction tomorrow (7/24/13).

I know Vincent is missed everyday by his family, friends and classmates, we will never forget him.  He graduated in my brothers's class.  Rest in peace.  Marlene
