John Crimmel (1970)

Carey was a really great guy and one of my best friends at Baker. He was both well liked and well respected by those who knew him. As it so often happens with high school friendships we drifted apart once we graduated. But it seems like of all the people I knew at Baker Carey was the one that I probably ran into more often than any of my other Baker friends and classmates. It was usually at the mall or at a fast food place but wherever it was it was always a joy to see him. We would stop and talk for a few minutes and catch up on what was going on in our lives and then we would go our separate ways. Every once in a while one of us would say, " Hey we ought to get together for dinner sometime ", but unfortunately it never happened. The last time I saw him was the day before he passed away. I called his house to check on him and his wife Martha said that Carey would love to see me. Well, I went and I'm glad I did. I went in to the room that Carey was in and when he saw me his face lit up for just a very brief moment and in a weakened voice said to me, " Hey man, good to see you ". For those of you who know me you're going to find this hard to believe but for one of the few times in my adult life I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. Finally I said. Its good to see you too Carey. I had brought my senior annual and I showed him some pictures of some of our former classmates and kind of caught him up with who was doing what. I stayed approximately 40 minutes and would have liked to have stayed longer but because of his weakened state I didn't want to wear him out. Less than 24 hours later he was gone. Gods getting a good one. Well, everyone that goes to heaven are good people but Carey is one of the best. I know that his loving and devoted wife Martha and their children and grandchildren are going to miss him as will those of us who were friends and acquaintances and who's lives he touched. God has taken him home way too early and only HE knows why. Rest well my friend and hopefully one day we will renew our friendship in Gods Holy Kingdom.
