In Memory

Sarah E. Mazeika (Eddy Faculty)

Mrs. Mazeika passed away Feb. 17, 1988 due to cancer. Her daughter, Missy Mazeika, BHS '72 shares this with us ..... "My dad passed away Jan.3, 1977 (Mr. Goodrum drove mother to the hospital)and my grandmother (mom's mom who lived with us) was buried in July 1983. I think that as much as mom loved you guys, she just got tired. Dorothy Cheatham called me (I was living in West Point, N.Y.) and told me mom wasn't doing well- still teaching----and her stubburn gene was passed down to me------but in poor health. I came down and took her to the doctor. She was sent to some specialists and at that time she was given 6-9 months. She fought the good fight-reading books, doing the cross word puzzles IN INK!!!! And not missing a college football game on TV. There are no words that can convey how much joy and happiness her students from Key Elementary and Eddy gave her. It almost sounds trite, but as I type this I can hear her talking about so many of you. She continued to "stay up" on how her students were doing after they left her class. She would be the first to have signed into this resource {class website}. I wonder what her screen name would have been for AIM??? She was so very proud of the Baker High School family. You all made her so very happy. Thank you!"

Mrs Mazeika was a great inspiration for me. She gave all that she had to pass on. I am very gratefull for the time I had her as a teacher. I also remember Frank. My house got rolled one night because of him. My mom freaked out.smile. Memorys are like nuggets in your heart. I have these. God Bless.Chaplain Debbie Moreland

Missy,

You know I loved your mom. I can still see her in her tennis shoes, teaching class.

Missy, I taught 7th and 8th Grade English there at Eddy from Jan. 1972 until June 1976 when I moved to Chicago and remember your mom well. The students loved her and she had their respect. She was a joy to be around and I have fond memories on how well that faculty got along. That voice and laugh of hers was memorable.

Mr. Goodrum used to introduce me to administration folks as the teacher who ran the "Cat House" since I had a CFA registered cattery at the time....he'd laugh every time he mentioned it. I sure remember Dot Cheatham as the long time Secretary. Ruth Mezick (her husband Paul taught at BHS) was a dear friend.

I had the pleasure of being a student of Mrs. Mazeika's at Eddy Jr. She was a dear woman who had an indomitable spirit. I attended her funeral, Dot Cheatham contacted me at Fort Bragg and I drove down. I had sat at her kitchen table years earlier and she helped me apply to Auburn, I actually got in with a little help from her. I owe much to her and always will.
I am holding the pocket dictionary she gave me prior to College as I write this, it has traveled all over World with me, sat with me on the Bench for many years until I retired and now is on the shelf behind me, in arms reach as I practice each day. I suppose a good thing never goes out of style, just like her to know what I would need on all my paths in life, she knew what we needed and saw to it that we got them before she left us.

God bless and keep her.

I remember Mrs. Mazeika very well. She was very excited about math and loved to say the word "multiplicative". Don't ask me why. I don't even know what it means. But that's my fault. She was a very good teacher and well liked. She always wore tennis shoes and I think it was her trademark.

I had Mrs. Mazeika at Key school, Imagine my suprise when I had her the next year at Eddy jr. I thought for sure she was following me, and we even joked about it!!
If I even thought of slacking off she would not let me.Actually I credit her with my sucess at school and later in my years in the Navy and after the Navy.
I remember Frank showing up and getting the Keys to her car so he could get a carton of cigarettes out of the trunk.
Mrs. Mazeika also knew my mother so there was no goofing off allowed.
I'm sorry I did not know about her passing I would have attended the funeral services, I would have flown in from Sicily where I was stationed at the time!
I also remember the tennis shoes she wore when teaching the class. Mrs. Mazeika has touched me and I'm sure she has had an impact on every one that was lucky enough to have been taught by her!!

No one could forget this lady. If you had her math class at Eddy Jr. High, and I did, she announceate math words clearly and over and over again until we got it, or faked it one! lol! Cause it should come test time. Yep, she love to wear those flat tennis shoes all the time, and rightly so.....being up on her feet all the time and wizzing back and forth at the black board, with math problems!! Just makes my head spin thinking about it! lol!! You had a passion for math and taught it very well. I can honestly say she loved what she was doing and wanted her students to do their best and try, even if we did not understand she would set up some tuitoring classess to do one on one. I came to appreciate and respect her for her style and hard working soul. God bless her remaining family members and rest her soul! I will always remember this dear woman.

This lady was a force of nature and I have tried to live up to her model in my last 32 years as a teacher,
