James Ralph Etheridge (1974)

Miss Skinner was my supervising teacher during my student teacher experience at Spencer High School. She was a fantastic mentor and taught me a lot during my brief semester with her. I had not know her while she was at Baker High, but can understand why her students loved and respected her. She was a great teacher and I have tried to emulate her in my 29 years of teaching.

Barbara Campbell (1968)

Ms. Skinner was my favorite teacher. I was in her homeroom and took her government class; she was the facality advisor for Beta-Tri-Hi-Y while I was president(1967-1968). In short, I loved her. She gave me my first bottle of Estee Lauder purfume. I think of her often. The world is a better place because she was here.

I remember Miss Skinner like everyone else, a hard teacher but a good teacher. I also remember about the mini-skirt Evelyn. That was a fun class and we really learned from Miss Skinner. class of '67.

Dawn Langley (1970)

Year after year, and at every reunion, I have asked about Ms. Skinner. No one I spoke to could tell me. This is my first time going through the memorial section beyond my year ('70), and here I see she is no longer with us. I'm saddened by it, and to learn that she enjoyed such a short retirement.

When I think of Ms. Skinner (always Ms.), I recall how I was challenged to do better in her government class. I wanted to be in the "accelerated" group. She told me I would only be moved up if I raised my sad "barely C" average. I promptly did just that, and enjoyed my "raise" the rest of the year.
I used to look for ways to hide a cigarette before getting out of class to go the girls' room to smoke it (gasp)--yes, I did. Ms. S. would "search" me before I left, but I found innovative and interesting places to hide my smokes (ha, ha). She knew it, too, but didn't press me. I just had to work twice as hard to make up for what I had missed while absent!
She was such a special lady, and a talented teacher. I became a teacher myself, and know first hand what it is like to be faced with a group of "don't want to be theres" who just need a little push to start learning.
Thanks, Ms. Skinner. You had a tremendous impact on my life, and in the lives of so many others.

Evelyn Butler (Winter) (1966)

Miss Skinner is one teacher I will never forget.  I was in her Government class and she was a hard teacher but a caring one.  My home life was not a very good one and she picked up on that. She pulled me aside one day and said "I have seen what you are capable of and it's not making bad grades - what can I do to help?"  That is something that I always remembered.

Lou Nelson (1968)

I treasure my Senior year ('68) report card with her comments on the back. "Insolent remarks in class", she wrote. She's the one who taught me to question authority and challenge them when you think they are overstepping, speak truth to power, and always have your facts right before sticking your foot in your mouth. She never sent my to O.P.'s office, but I did spend a few mnutes standing outside the classroom door to "cool off". TYVM, MS Skinner, enjoy the best vintages where you are, RIP.

Miss Skinner taught me in 1966.  She was my best teacher .   She cared. She let me know I was important to her. She wanted me to suceed. She made me work hard. I have thought of her often.  I am so sorry I never thanked her. I am a better person because of Marta Linda Skinner. God bless her.

Susan Strickland (Graham) (1967)

I was in Ms. Skinner's History as a Junior, and her Gov't class as a Senior. She was a firm teacher but not too hard. She took a personal interest in me. I really never knew why at that time. However, after reading the other comments I realize, that she really just cared for her students. I started to work at the telephone company in my Junior year and had a steady boyfreind by now, and somehow my grades in her class fell drastically. I'll never forget the last note she wrote on my paper, she wrote, " As a student you have become a great disappointment to me." I never got a chance to tell how sorry I was.                                                                                                                                                         Susan Strickland Graham  Class of' '67
