I have always remembered this for some reason and it seems just like yesterday that it happened. I was not what you would call a "studious" student... but one of my memories of Col. Horan was that one day during class one of my best friends Bettyjean Frank and I got the giggles in class... now I am not talking about the little silent giggles... I am talking about the shoulder shaking, not being able to hold it in giggles! Well, naturally Col. Horan asked us to stop... WE COULD NOT!!... so his next step was to ask us to step out into the hallway to reprimand us.... as we stood in the hallway with tears running down our face from laughing so hard and not being able to stop... it suddenly turned from Bettyjean and I laughing... to Bettyjean, myself, and now Col Horan laughing with us!!! So proves the point that laughter is contagious!... and teachers can be fun! :)

Bug Eyes so big......I could not help but pay attention. He kept my attention in class. A very sweet man to know and taught very well at that. God rest his soul! We will never forget!

Along with Mrs. Ruth Brady, Col. Horan was the best teacher that I had at Baker. He was a good man, teacher, and veteran.

I remember mr. Horan saying all the time " A CLOSED BOOK IS A CLOSED MINE"! What a wonderful time in his class! He is missed.

I'll Miss singing Barbershop with you Bill.  You had one of the finest tenor voices I have ever heard.  Most of our group is gone now, I am quite certain you are still busting heavenly chords now.

I remember Colonel Horan as a good teacher and very easy going.  I think it was near the end of school my tenth grade year and we were turning in books.  Someone had taken my book and I didnt know what to do.  So, I took someone elses book and crossed out their name and put my name in it.  The Colonel took one look and said "this is not the book I gave you at the first of the year!  Where is yours"?     I told the truth and he just took the book and put it in the stack and let it go.  I never heard more about it.  Thanks Colonel

What a guy!  Too bad I did't have him as a teacher until my Senior Year.  He made class interesting.  I especially liked some of his exams that included test questions with a military theme.  After all, he was a veteran.  I still laugh when I remember one of the test questions was, "I'm Captain Jenks of the Horse Marines.  I feed my dog on steak and beans.  I always live beyond my means."  This was a multiple choice quesion and the proper answer was that Captain Jenks needed a Budget.  Amazing that I can still remember it and still laugh about it after more than 50 years!
