My old friend Lisa Powell Pruitt said it right..I would rather have the old girl go out in a blaze of glory than bulldozed into the ground.  One last bonfire!  Our memories are safe in a hearts and minds.  Lions Forever!

Sad that Baker is going, but it seems appropriate for it to go out in a blaze of glory rather than with a whimper by bulldozer.  That is more in line with the spirit of Baker that I remember.  I was there when it was on fire the last time and sad to not be this final time.  Good-bye to a dear friend!  I hope that anyone with pictures will post them for those of us far away.

Just got home from watching Baker go up in a blaze of glory. It's  the freshman wing that is getting most of the damage.  Guess she didn't want to go out with a wrecking ball so now one last time our beloved school made the new, 10:00 and 11:00 news

Just got home, couldnt believe what I had heard on the Ch. 9 News update. The whole 2nd floor of the freshman wing was ablaze when I got to the O'Riley's across Victory drive. First floor, where the Home Ec. rooms was starting to flare up. Lord knows the memories those halls have for me!

Saw many of our BHS classmates at the fire.  John Crimmel- thanks for giving me a call.  Diane, Reggie, Roger, Chelzie, and or course John, good seeing yall, but hated it was under these circumstances.  According to a fireman, the freshman wing would fall tonite.

I can't believe Baker is burning. Since I live out of town, I have e-mail alerts from the Ledger and just signed on to check my e-mails and saw it. I didn't get to attend the Lions on the Lawn but I'm so glad that it was planned ahead of this happening. Guess we will go out in a blaze of glory. Very thankful to Terry for creating this web-site. At least we have Bakerville, but I wanted a brick.

Just got home about 30 minutes ago from seeing one of the saddest things I have ever seen, our beloved alma mater going up in flames. Around 8:45 pm I got a call from Sylvia Head informing me that the freshman wing of Baker was on fire. I immediately told my wife to grab a camera and lets go. Before we left the house I called Roy Cook and let him know. He couldn't believe it. As we were driving down South Lumpkin Road toward the school you could see a large cloud of smoke in the sky over the school. As we got closer to the school we could see the glow of the flames while we were still on South Lumpkin Road. The closer we got to the school the brighter the glow. We turned off of South Lumpkin onto Benning Dr and as we got to Victory Dr you could see the flames coming out of the roof of the freshman wing. We pulled into the O'reilly's auto parts parking lot directly across from the school and began taking pictures. After a few minutes I decided to go across the cross walk to the Baker side of Victory Drive. Once there you could see everything much better. I stayed there for a little while and shot some pictures and went back to the other side. Roy then called me and told me he was on the way. Ran into Chelzie Colson while waiting for Roy. When he got their we went back up on the crosswalk for a little better look. Ran into Baker alums Roger Stanford 73 and Dwight Parker 81 ( I think ) on the crosswalk. Got a call from Diane Biglane who was actually within spitting distance of the fire . She was in the parking lot of the pawn shop and stayed there until the police ran her off.She hooked up with me and Roy and my wife. Doug Shafer was there taking pics as fast as his camera could shoot them. His sister Barbara 65 was there also. For a while it looked like the fire was going to be contained to the back half of the freshman wing and then it spread up toward the auditorium with the flames growing higher. Fortunately Columbus Fire Department had a truck in place wetting down the roof of the auditorium which probably prevented the fire from spreading to it. I made another trip across the crosswalk but the smoke started to get pretty think so I made my way back across to the other side. I stayed at the site for about two hours total. While talking with several alums we would say things like, Do you see where that third window from the end is on the top floor? My sophomore year I had a geography class with Major Blumhagen there. The 4th window was where Mr. Bland had a geography class. My junior year I had U S History across the hall. On the bottom floor I had a Math class with Mrs. Rose about midway down the freshman wing. So many memories came rushing into my head from those days 40 plus years ago. Well at least a great portion of that part of the building will not fall victim to the wrecking ball. Well folks its late and I need to get some sleep but I think that my efforts will be futile. I love Baker High School. The memories that I have of not only those days from so long ago but from the recent past are good, no, great ones. Good night and God Bless you all. John

All of us Bums know that memories are forever, it would take more than a fire or a wrecking ball to take away from us what we all know was the best school in the southeast !!!!!

It was more than a school, it was where our dreams and hopes were born.  She gave us tools to become who we are. The was a spirit there that other schools were envious of.

I am proud to be called a Baker Bum....the lady will live forever in glory in my heart.

"When we burn we burn in fire for the glory of Baker High, rah, rah rah." The old girl went down in a blaze of glory.  Good for her.  Wish we could all have been there for the final bon-fire.

Baker Fire

Gang,

If you think this fire was not started by someone who has a vested interest, you believe in Santa Clause. This is just a Columbus way of doing business. Sad and shameful, but truthfully, the school board is indirectly responsible for this fire by letting the building go unattended since 1991. It was bound to happen sooner or later. You have had some "real jewels" on your school board for years. Mostly fools gold jewels.

Linda, thanks for the reply - now that you are the "administrator", I will just make my note here--------I just came from the school a few minutes ago and there were a couple of news crews and Ish and Sande were there.  Also Reggie Riggaloto from class of 73, I think - in tears, made an announcement that they plan on starting to knock the school down today.  Ok, so that is word on the street.  She is begging and was filmed (whether they air it  or not, I don't know) begging for Lions to go down to the school and take shifts or something with signs asking them to "SAVE OUR BRICKS" or to not begin total destruction of our beloved school just yet.  She asked me to post a note on the site to see if we can get some folks down there to pickett.  Ok, my job is done.

Note: it IS a sad site to see and even though the school went up in flames, our memories have not and our classmates & friends have not & this site has not.  Baker has been a fighter and has looked pretty shabby for quite a while, but she held her spot - and will even to the very end.  The school did not burn to the ground and is still standing, but that side is definitely totally gutted by the fire, the smell of smoke in the air.  Some think "well, it was going to be knocked down anyway".  True,  but there are some that would come to support her at the end if it is a planned happening and many want bricks.

As I sit here looking at these pictures of my beloved school go up in smoke, I thank God for her and the memories she helped create for me. My Baker family is in mourning for the grand old lady and the tears that I now cry will be remembered forever. The tears I shed during my junior year were out of fear but these I shed now are out of sorrow.  If anyone is gathering bricks, please put my name on one. BAKER FOREVER in our hearts, Becky

The Holmes Brothers had nothing to do with the fire. Maybe that really didn't need to be said, but Me and Harry have always been pre disposed to denying any thing bad that ever happened around the school. Just ask Mr. Boyles.

Oh yeah, I'm thinking it was probably some freshmen smoking out behind the gym, and Harry thinks it was probably the ghost of Gen. Sherman, making a pass back through Georgia.

Not trying to make light guys, just need a little break from the sad.

Some things are just meant to happen.  Some people say there are no coincidences.  I feel it was meant to be that this 11 year old LION CUB picked up the book which had his friend Ricky's name in it.  It was meant for him to write this message and touch our hearts in a way we'll never forget.

The ol' Baker High was gutted by fire. I just got word; Sad day for for us all and for the city of Columbus, Ga to lose such a historical building that way. Hopefully, a historical marker may be erected on site. As with all things, it was in spirit that the school was conceived, and it is in spirit, it shall live on forever.

Peggy,

Your slide show is terrific! I went by the school the next day, when I was in town. I have to say it was a sad sight for me. But the fire still didn't beat our girl down. Just crippled her :o) I guess all the BUMS have to accept the inevitable however it really is hard. Again, thanks for the great pictures. Becky, Class of '72

Good afternoon everyone,

Went by Baker this morning and there was a fire truck in the parking lot. They were just finishing up from putting out another fire. Spot with security and evidently a " hot spot " in the basement ignited and it took the firemen about 25 minutes or so to get it  put out.  Everything is fine now.

Take care, John
