Bill Callahan - Class Of 1961 VIEW PROFILE

Bill Callahan

"Bill was killed in Viet Nam between 1966-67. I'm not sure of the date but it was during the year my husband, Jack Wallace (Baker 1963) was stationed in Thailand and I was spending that year with my parents in Columbus. Bill played on our football team. We were neighbors at Ft. Benning. His father was the Post Sgt.Major. When they had Bill's funeral at the Main Post Chapel, it was full to capacity, I sat in the balcony."  Jean Kaeserman Wallace BHS

I first knew Bill when he was the Safety Patrol on the Sunday School bus I rode at Fort Benning when I was in the 4th grade. I remember that he was killed while I was a student at Columbus College in the Fall of 1966 or Spring of 1967. His wife was in my Biology class and I think I recall that she was about to go to Hawaii to meet him on his R&R when she received the news of his death.

I always admired Bill; his passing was such a loss. He was truly a gentleman and, I believe, destined for great things. He lived his short life very well.

Bill and I went to high school together also worked part time at Fort banning more playing than working. After High school Bill went up to North Georgia College and I went to Columbus College. In 1966 I met Bill at building Four at Fort Benning for lunch, Bill had got his commission and finished ranger training with orders for Vietnam. His father who was Sgt Major of the Post had arranged for a briefing for Bill with several Officers who had just returned from Vietnam. Several hours later we talked some more . He was looking to buy a small hand gun of his own to take over with him. Later I heard Bill had been killed in battle in Vietnam. I went to Bill's funeral on Main Post and it was one of the largest I have ever been at. He had a Hourse Drawn carriage from Main Post Church to the Post Cemetery.

My father and mother are beried on Main Post and many yeas later I went over to Bill's grave and found that his sister his mother and his father are all buried in the same plot with Bill. The cemetery told me that some of the grave plots family could have 4 family members buried in the same plot stacking the casket.

God Bless Bill   Robert Major
