Phillip graduated from Baker High School in 1966. He was drafted into the Marine Corps. Entered the service via Selective Service. Served during the Vietnam War. He began his tour on September 30, 1968. Taft had the rank of Private First Class. His military occupation or specialty was Rifleman. Service number assignment was 2455347. Attached to 1st Marine Division, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, F Company.

Philip Jeffrey Taft is buried or memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery. This is a National American Cemetery administered through the Department of the Army.
