James "Jim" Winthrop Gunn, Sr passed away peacefully on 21, April 2022 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, Ga. Jim was 79 years old, born in Sacramento, California in 1942 to Lola and Jack Gunn, who preceded him in death, but lived his life in Columbus, GA.

Thru his life he was many things - a veteran, and retired from Civil Service for many years as the Chief at DRMO on Ft. Benning prior to retiring, A Scoutmaster where he was referred to as Gentle Ben because of his big/tall stature, a Deacon, Baseball and Softball coach, even played volleyball with the seniors at the YMCA, but his favorite job was after he retired was when he began at Callaway Gardens as a tour guide. He loved Callaway, knew all the history and was always sharing that knowledge with others.

Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Gunn; his children Jennifer Cameron, twin Grandchildren Landon and Madison Cameron who referred to Jim as Papa and James Gunn, Jr - his children included Jewell Lawson, and grandkids Danielle and Devin; Jason and Jamie Anthony and his grandkids Kyra and Gavin, and Heath Anthony and grandkids Hunter and Jordan...who called Jim "Pop Gunn". His sister Carolyn Simpson (Charles)- Gresham, Oregon and his nephews David, Chris & Carl and their families. His sisters-in-law Susan Gillespie (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and her children, Dawn Lowe, Troy and Shawn Gillespie and their families -- Betty Gordy (Columbus, Ga) and her children Rob & Rick Gordy , and Cathy Storey and their families. Nephews David Bussey (Nicole and their children) of Cataula, Starling (Connie, and their children) of Bainbridge; George Eberhardt - Missouri and his daughters Debra and Diane and their families.

Jim was always getting together some sort of ballgame at family gatherings and with that many nieces and nephews that wasn't hard to do. He loved to draw and color, and also made several hand carved walking canes.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 26, 2022 from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. A procession will follow into Parkhill Cemetery for a graveside service at 1:00 PM.
