She was such a sweet girl and it was such a loss when she left.

Sally lived behind me in Benning Hills and we became friends my junior, her sophomore year at Baker. She made our cheerleader uniforms! She was a very talented girl and we lost her way too soon. Sally and I used to drive over to North Columbus and TP my now ex-husband's house during the time he had "dumped" me! When I went off to Georgia Southwestern, we kept in touch. It was very hard on me hearing of her death and how she died. She was a kind, sensitive individual who I think about to this day.....

Linda Lucas (Stratford) (1970)

Sally was one of my best friends at Baker. People would confuse us because we looked alike. In either my sophomore or junior annuals, someone addressed their note to "Sally." She and I used to fast walk the track together during P.E. She was so excited about starting parachuting lessons and had asked me to join her. I was super acrophopic so I declined. I wasn't at the exhibition the day she died. I heard about her death on the radio that day and was heartbroken. I still miss her to this day.

Sally was my little sister...full of life...full of LOVE for life! Those of you who knew her know that. I have enjoyed this website and would like to encourage others who knew and remember her to share their memories of her. One of my favorite, and most poignant ones, is our last Christmas together at which she received her jump boots. She was sooo excited because she looked forward to a "soft landing" because of the special boots. Linda mentioned that she heard about Sally's death on the radio...so did I! My fiance (now husband of 39 years) and I were between Statesboro and Millen listening to WLS in Chicago heading toward his home in Louisville, GA, and couldn't be reached by phone. How I miss her, even now!

Sally and I had a couple of classes together. She marched to her own drummer and I always found her interesting and extremely intelligent. She was great at everything she tried and her death was very hard to bear. Even after 40 years, it is hard to think about.

I asked Linda Lucas Stratford what happened to the memorial for Sally that was in the courtyard between the library and the front wing. I was hoping it was given to the family. If anyone knows, please let Sally's sister know, Carol Keifer Eubank.

Even after all these years I still find myself thinking about you. We had several of the same classes and you were always so full of life. So talented, you won an award for your sewing abilities which always had me in awe as I couldn't and still can't sew on even a button. I remember a complete wool suit that you made! Amazing. You did indeed leave us too soon.

I pray God has you wrapped in His loving arms.

Joann

Whenever I visit Columbus and drive by the Fort Benning cemetery, I think of Sally.  We sat next to each other in several classes and laughed more than we listened to the teachers.  She was like a sister to me and I missed her very much when she died in that tragic accident.  Just before Baker burned and then was torn down, I took many pictures of the sad state the school was in.  I especially went to the patio area built in her memory, but it was gone and I have no knowledge why.  Like Baker itself, my memory of Sally will always be with me.
