SFC James Silas Streetman, Jr. was born December 20, 1929 at 737 Front Street in Columbus, Ga., the son of James Silas, Sr. and Lillian Vondula Hurtt Streetman. He was killed in action on July 22, 1950 near the town of Taejon, Republic of Korea (ROK). He was previously wounded on July 16, 1950. His remains were listed as unrecoverable in 1956 and the unidentified were sent with 847 other unknowns to Honolulu, Hawaii to be interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punch Bowl. He remained there until 2017 when the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) requested disinterment of 10 Korean War unknowns for possible identification. Testing proved SFC Streetman's identity and they were certified on August 31, 2018.
SFC Streetman enlisted in the U. S. Army in September of 1946 for a period of 18 months. He was sent to Japan. He was discharged in December of 1947. He reenlisted in February of 1948 and was sent back to Japan. While he was stationed in Japan his Company B, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division was ordered to Korea.
Survivors included his parents (now deceased), brothers; Bobby, and Michael (now deceased), sisters, Lillian (now deceased), Eunie Mae, Frances, Maryln (now deceased), and Sharon. Extended family includes 17 nephews and nieces, 23 grand nephews and nieces, 27 great grand nephews and nieces, and many cousins.
Funeral services with U.S. Army Honors will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, November 03, 2018 at Ft. Benning's Infantry Chapel. Interment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends Friday, November 2, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, Ga. 31907.
