S. Leon Brown

December 24, 1921- May 12, 2013

Columbus, GA- Mr. Simon Leon Brown of Columbus passed away Sunday at St. Francis Hospital at the age of 90. He resided at 4160 Swann Street.

The son of the late James Calvin and Minnie Battle Williams, Mr. Brown was born in Pittsview, AL on December 24, 1921. He was a 1940 graduate of Rosedale High School, obtained his BS degree in Music from Alabama A&M in 1949; his Master's degrees from Vandercook College of Music in 1953 and Auburn University in 1967 in counseling and education. He was the Director of the Spencer High Green Waves Marching Band from 1949 until 1979, retiring after 34 years as a guidance counselor at Baker High School. He was also retired from Civil Services, Ft. Benning as an Education Specialist.

Mr. Brown was a member of the First African Baptist Church where he served diligently with the Deacons and Trustee Ministries, as a Sunday School Teacher and was the former Director of Education. He was a member of the Georgia, Muscogee, Retired and the Southern Educators Associations. His civic and social organizations include: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (Life Member), Mr. and Mrs. Club, and the Prince Hall Masonic.

Surviving his departure with cherished memories, include: his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Janie Mae Richardson Brown; two children, Crystal Simone Brown and Daryl K. Brown (Radhia); three grandsons, Kelsey Leon Brown, Malcolm and Jordan McClenic; the Childs Family; other relatives and friends.

The Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Brown will be Friday, 12 Noon at the First African Baptist Church with interment in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Roderick Green, pastor will officiate. Reverend Robert M. Dickerson will deliver the eulogy. Visitation is Thursday beginning at 2:00 pm with an Omega Service at 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. "A Touch of Dignity for Those Who Care."
