Jeffrey Butterworth - Class Of 1976

Jeffrey Butterworth

Tragically, Jeffrey was murdered at the age of 17 when he was a junior at Baker. See the sad details below.....

Fort Wayne, IN -- July 16, 1999 -- An Indiana man, accused of killing the son of a U.S. Army soldier in 1975, agreed not to fight extradition to Alabama.
Edward McClenhan, 48, is accused of stabbing the 17-year-old son of a soldier at Fort Benning, Ga. McClenahan also was a soldier at Fort Benning.

News reports at the time of the slaying said Jeffrey Butterworth climbed from a creek and struggled to a nearby road, where he died of a knife wound to the chest.

Jeffrey is believed to have been abducted in Georgia, sexually assaulted and then killed the next day in Alabama.

McClenahan was court-martialed in 1975 for a similar abduction. He served five years in Leavenworth for sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated assault in that case.

The victim in that case survived.

McClenahan was interviewed as a suspect in 1975, but was not arrested or charged.

The investigation has been pursued sporadically over the years, but was reopened by the FBI in 1996.

The bureau received new information, developed the case and McClenahan was indicted by a grand jury.

McClenahan faces life in prison if convicted

I can not believe the time that has come and gone, & yet it seems like yesterday that we all

were in school together. Jeff was that free hearted spirit that was so cool and yet giving to

his friends. Jeff's best friend in high school (Bruce Jeffery) was like a brother to him as well

and you never saw the 2 apart during school. I just wonder what would have been IF Bruce

could of been with Jeff on that day. Just maybe he would of been alive today. He was only

16 years old! I still have all the news articles and a flower perserved (white carnation) to

keep in a friends album so he will be remembered thru the years. I prayed for the longest

for the "killer" to be apprehended and brought to justic in this horrible attack! Maybe now

with the latest news released about this case, the family can get closure and "justic" will be

handed down to that "sick man" that stole the life of a teenager so long ago! God bless the

family of Jeff Butterworth and I pray his soul is at peace in heaven today. He is not with us

today but "He is Not Forgotten either!
