Jimmy Barnes (1967)

HI, THIS IS JIM BARNES. WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OLD, I HAD A FRIEND WHO LIVED DOWN THE STREET, NAMED RANDALL. RANDALL WAS AN AQUAINTANCE OF LARRY, AND I SAW THEM TOGETHER ABOUT 4-5 TIMES OVER THE YEARS.
WELL, LATER WHEN I WAS IN THE 9TH GRADE AT BAKER, I JOINED ROTC. LARRY WAS A LT. IN ROTC THAT YEAR.
LARRY GAVE ME A COMMAND (DONT RECALL EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS) AND LATER ANOTHER OFFICER ASKED ME WHO GAVE YOU THAT COMMAND PRIVATE BARNES? I REPLIED "LT. WHIMPLE SIR" HE SAID WHO? ONCE AGAIN I REPLIED "LT. WHIMPLE SIR" THIS REPEATED 3 OR 4 TIMES. THEN THE OFFICER RESPONDED."GIVE ME 50 BARNES" AND I HIT THE GROUND FOR 50 PUSHUPS.
I HAD NO IDEA LARRYS REAL NAME WAS WHIPPLE, BECAUSE AS A CHILD ALL I HEARD MY FRIEND RANDALL CALL HIM WAS WHIMPLE.
I FOUND OUT THAT DAY, THE HARD WAY.
I DIDNT KNOW LARRY PERSONALLY OTHER THAN JUST RECONIZING HIM PASSING IN THE HALLWAYS AT BAKER, AND AS I SAID SEEING HIM VISIT MY CHILDHOOD FRIEND WHEN LARRY WAS 12-14 YEARS OLD.
I WROTE THIS WITH HOPES LARRYS FRIENDS AND FAMILY MAY GET A LITTLE CHUCKLE FROM THIS. JUST MY PERSONAL MEMORY OF LARRY.
SINCERLY,
JIM BARNES (67)

Ritchie Stanford (1964)

I was close friends with Larry and his brother, Tom all through high school. Their mother was a wonderful woman and a single working mom raising two crazy boys.I could tell a million stories of late night poker games and getting up before dawn to go hunting in the freezing cold.

Remember that Columbus in the 60's only had 3 TV stations- CBS, ABC, and an independent station. Larry climbed up a tall pine in his yard and placed an antenna so that they could pick up the NBC station in Montgomery. Every week I was over there to watch Man from Uncle and Laugh In. Those were the good old days. God Bless Larry and his Mother.

Hi everyone, this is Tom, Larrys brother..Thanks everyone for the great comments on Larry... Larry and I had some great times growing up.... and as adults.... and Ritchie remembers some of them.... including adjusting the antenna on top of the pine tree... I miss him alot, and my mother.... they went to their reward just a few months apart.... and still have fond memories of those times we all spent together... Take care everyone and God Bless you all....

Marie Elaine Cook (1963)

Iremember both Larry and Tom as they lived down the street from my family for many years. Larry was always smiling and waving when he saw me or my brother Walter as we walked past their home to get to ours. I remember both from seeing Larry & Tom in the hallways at school. I as so saddened to hear of Larry's passing and my heart goes out to Tom. We just lost our Mom, who was one of the 2 original families left on Rice St.from back in the day.
