Dennis Stanford - Class Of 1964

Dennis L. Stanford, Jr. July 24, 1946- June 17, 2009 COLUMBUS, GA— Mr. Dennis "Denny" Lynn Stanford, Our Son, Father, Brother, Soldier and Friend has gone to be with the Lord this date: 17 June 2009. Denny was born in Columbus, GA, attended Baker High School, briefly attended the United States Naval Academy on a Presidential Appointment and subsequently transitioned to Georgia Tech, and he graduated in 1969. He was a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and served as Social Chairman during his time at Tech. He also obtained an MBA in International Management from Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for ten years. While in the USAF ANG, Denny served in the 128th Tactical Fighter Squadron, flying both the F-105G Wild Weasel as an Electronic Warfare Officer and the F-4 Phantom II as a Weapons Systems Officer. Denny's friends in the 128th remarked that he would "leave no airplane unflown, no beer undrunk and no man-day unpaid." In the USAF 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron Denny flew two tours in Vietnam, his unit was one of the first to utilize laser guided technology. The men from the 433rd describe Denny as a well loved, kind, gentleman that was truly a leader among the elite. Denny was a remarkably proud father, raising a son that would earn an Army ROTC scholarship to Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Denny worked for Coca Cola, traveling the globe as a Transportation Procurement Manager for nearly 15 years. Most recently, he worked as a procurement agent for KBR Ð stationed in Kuwait, Dubai, Iraq and Afghanistan. While serving in the military Denny received several awards and medals from his time in combat. Denny is survived by his mother Annie Margaret Stanford of Columbus, GA., son, Dennis "Chip" L. Stanford, Jr. of Lilburn, GA, brother and sister-in-law, Danny R. and Debra Bryant Stanford of Cumming, GA, Chip's mother Candace F. Stanford of Lilburn, GA, Nieces, Faithe Stanford Michaels (Dan), their son Jared of Alpharetta, GA and Sheridan Stanford Surles (Chris), and their children Dalton and Landon of Columbus, GA. Denny was preceded in death by his father Spurgeon Stanford. He was very loved by his immediate family including many other close relatives and friends. The 128th writes: Denny Stanford laid his life on the line time after time for his country, squadron mates, and for you too. He went in harm's way with us and for us. Services will be held at the Roswell Funeral Home, Mansell Road, Roswell, Monday, June 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA following the service at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at Roswell Funeral Home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. Ð 5:00 p.m.
