I was just notified at the office by a client, that former client, friend, and Baker alumni Jim Payne, Class of '64, passed away Sunday August 27, 2017. Jim lived in Powder Springs, Georgia and we shared "Columbus" stories at breakfast sometimes. The Marietta Daily Journal ran a nice obituary about Jim, even mentioning he played football at Baker. Jim was the kind of guy you could drop off at 7 AM in a town he had never been in, and, by 7 PM he would have made a couple of friends for life. He was a Christian and I will miss him. -- Gary Jones '73

Sue and I attended Jimmy's funeral and it was tearfullly obvious how much he was loved.  We go back to the eight grade at Baker and he became a friend for life.  He would do anything for anyone at any time.  He was truly one of the good guys and he will be missed.

Lenny Shores (1964)

I was a new-be arriving from Germany walking on the football field so nervous that I almost turned around but out of no where this burly stout guy soaking in sweat runs up to me and says 'you look lost, can I help?'  Yep, you guessed it 'Jimmy Payne'. Next thing I know I'm standing in front of coach Ball who took me in and made me feel at home when all I felt was scared to death!!  The rest of my junior and senior year, Jimmy was always -Always there for me..  Forty years later and many years over seas, Jimmy was there to welcome me back to our class reunion!  It was Jimmy who lent me his car after returning from Iraq. It was Jimmy who called and emailed me to 'Just check on me!' My heart is in my throat but I here his words 'I see you for eternity Lenny!'  Jimmy, I miss you terribly, I hope I follow your example and be half the example you were to others!!!

RIP, Jimmy.  Jimmy put his all into everything he did in life.  I remember standing in the locker room in Valdosta after a game and two or three people carrying Jimmy in by his arms and legs.  He was exhausted and dehydrated to the point that he couldn't stand. Anybody that knew Jimmy knew he could sweat buckets and he left it all on the field that night. We lost the game, but not because of his effort.  We lost a good man.

Jimmy & I have been close friends since 1952. We lived & grew up on the same street going thru school & college together. We worked together when we were teenagers. Our dads owned a business together back then & they were close friends as well. Jimmy & I have stayed in touch over the many years. I will dearly miss Jimmy and I know he is in a better place! He was a very good person. Jimmy was a friend to everyone he met!

I remember many, many things he and I have done together over the years but I will always remember our last conversation over the phone a few weeks back. Jimmy said
"Johnny, you have been my friend longer than anybody, I love you and that is all I am going to say about that!"

My sincere condolences go to Kay and family. I would be there if I could but I will not be able to pay m
