Freida Dunlap

Freida Dunlap

Freida Dunlap passed away October 15, 2014.  Miss Dunlap served Baker High School as a biology teacher and then for many years as a Counselor. Her aunt, Betty Mock, also worked as a counselor at Eddy Junior High so counseling was a family affair.

So often Miss Dunlap befriended new teachers, sharing her teaching expertise and her knowledge of how to help students.  Her door was always open to students.  In addition to counseling, she also sponsored outstanding cheerleading squads each year.
Miss Dunlap loved the diversity of the student body at Baker and was proud that our students with their military family backgrounds practiced and believed in racial harmony long before integration had to be enforced by law.  During the "spring of the riots," as she called them, she was dismayed at the ugliness shown--not the cosmopolitan, yet friendly,  Baker she knew.
She enjoyed giving friends charm bracelets with a replica of Baker's Lion as the main charm.  If she missed any extracurricular events, they were few in number.  Not just a teacher or counselor, she was an ardent fan.
One of her favorite memories was the snow in 1973. She always had an extra tidbit to add about the students' reactions to that heavy snowfall. My memory of her stories included a window being broken in a staircase due to so many students leaning against it.
When she left Baker in the mid 1970s to return to her hometown in Bainbridge, Georgia, she had literally worked with thousands of students.  She gave them her time, her care, her expertise, and her wisdom.  As Marc Antony said of Julius Caesar, "When comes such another?"

Shirley Boyer (Cutler) (1967)

My all time favorite teacher.  My mother moved us to Wynton Road Apartments the summer of 1966.  In order for me to continue at Baker HS, Miss Dunlap would pick me up each morning to take me to school.  She was a very outgoing teacher and loved sponsoring the drill team.  I took biology in her class....an excellent teacher.  She actually cared for her students.  I am honored to have known her....Shirley Boyer Cutler class of 1967.
