Columbus, Georgia- James Albert "Jimmy" Carswell, age 77 of Columbus, Georgia died on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February, 6, 2013 at Wynnton United Methodist Church with Reverend (Dr.) Frank Parr, Reverend Lauri Hartley, and Reverend Clark Standard officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, February 5, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Carswell was born January 3, 1936 in Columbus, Georgia, the son of the late Mary and Albert Carswell. He lived in Columbus all of his life graduating in 1954 from Baker High School. Mr. Carswell then entered the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Joan Hall of Columbus. Mr. Carswell owned and operated Wynnton Barber Shop for 42 years until 2000. He continued to work in other barber shops until his failing health forced his retirement in 2011. Mr. Carswell enjoyed golf, running, traveling, and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Maple Ridge Golf Club, Wynnton United Methodist Church and the Goodwill Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Joan Hall Carswell; three daughters, Pat Hobbs (Jerry) of Eatonton, GA, Lynn Parham (Jiles) of Albany, GA, Amy Taff (Jamey) of Columbus; one son, Stephen Carswell (Suzanne) of Woodstock, GA; two brothers, Wayne Carswell (Ann) of Opelika, AL and Gene Carswell (Gwen) of Panama City, FL; one nephew, Tommy Carswell (Melanie) of Opelika, AL; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wynnton United Methodist Church or John B. Amos Cancer Center. Condolences may be offered at www.shcolumbus.com.
