I'm so sorry to hear this. I knew Gene from 4th grade on. Please give information on how to reach Joy. And love to the family.

I will talk to Joy this weekend, hopefully, and see what she would want to do.

I just learned of this--I am so saddened by it. And shocked.

Gene and I were great buddies in my senior year and after graduation. We used to spend hours discussing everything from politics to how much we enjoyed listening to music. We were two friends who just liked to talk.

One summer day, we went to that park with the lake and slippery rocks-Flat Rock. We were sitting on a rock overlooking the lake, and we talked about my poetry (I wrote some back then). He wanted to know if I would write a poem for him.
"Sure", I said thinking he meant sometime.
"Now?" he asked in a way that meant "I want you to do this right this minute!" Laughing, I said I would.

While he sat impatiently but quietly beside me in the sunshine, I wrote the following poem and dedicated it to him when I published Dreamtime (a small book of my poems). When I had finished writing, I gave it to him. He read it and said--"hrmph, this is pretty good."
High praise indeed from my dear friend.
Peace, Gene.

Flat Rock Park Is Forever

I'll sit here today and leave the world behind,
I'll put all of my worries out of my mind.
I'll pretend I'm alone, that there's noone there,
I'll put aside all thoughts and every care.

To be at peace with myself, to think only of good times,
To feel the sun on my face and the wind in the pines,
These things I love with each sigh of my heart,
I would stay in this place and never depart.

The water laps gently, this place is serene
And my heart cries in gladness for beauty unseen.
