- Benjamin Fletcher Peters, 78, of Smiths Station, AL, formerly of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at his residence.
The family will be having a private memorial service at a later date, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA.
Mr. Peters was born August 3, 1933 in Slocumb, AL, son of the late William Henry and Bertha Andrews Peters. He graduated from Baker High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 at the age of 17. He served in Korea during the Korean War and at several bases throughout Europe. He was particularly fond of his memories of playing football for his unit while stationed in France. He attended the University of Georgia through off campus classes held in Columbus, GA from 1955 to 1958. He worked in Civil Service at Ft. Benning for 17 years. His last employment before retirement was Manager of Star Bonding Company. Fletcher was extremely intelligent and curious. He was an avid reader and debater. He collected quotes that he found relevant and interesting. A quote by Ellen Parr included in his collection is particularly descriptive of his outlook on life, "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity." This fit him well as he was curious about everything and was constantly reading and researching. He truly enjoyed time with his family and his morning coffee and crossword puzzle ritual with his buddies at the BP Station each day. His "four girls" will miss him always saying, "Look here sweetheart" whenever he started a conversation (or debate) with them. His son will miss their freqeuent lively conversations and lunches at Evelyn's Cafe.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his two brothers, William Franklin Peters and Henry B. Peters; and his two sisters, Eunice Peters Forehand and Nellie Peters Adams.
Survivors include one son, Terry Wayne Henderson of Columbus, GA; four daughters, Cindy Peters Titzler and husband, Mike of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Connie Peters Friou and husband, Jack of Midland, GA, Cathy Peters Thorpe and husband, Mitchell of Columbus, GA and Cheri Peters Lee and husband, Mark of Kennesaw, GA; nine grandchildren, Kathleen Diana Henderson, Abby Michelle Bruce, Justin Michael Titzler, Carrie Friou Kiser, Catherine Emily Friou, Jonathan Mitchell Thorpe, Jessica Claire Thorpe, Shannon Alyse Lee and Paige Melanie Lee; three great grandchildren, Anna Nicole Pate, Emily Grace Brewer and Jack Bentley Kiser; two sisters, Ruby Peters Sullivan of Dothan, AL and Cary Peters Davis of Columbus, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
