Michael Miller "Mike" Smith - Class Of 1970 VIEW PROFILE

Michael Miller Mike Smith

Mike passed away on May 11, 2010 in Florida. (Information provided by his brother, Pat, 1972)

Mike Smith died in his home on May 11th, 2010 of heart failure. Mike was living in Cooper City, Florida at the time. A reference librarian with the Broward county libraries for the last 20 years, Mike spent his vacation time traveling the US, the Caribbean, and Europe. When he didn't have time for an extended trip, Mike would go up the road to Disney World and Epcot to collect stories from the people he met there. The world became a more serious place when Mike packed up his weird sense of humor and passed on.

A group of us went to camp one summer.  On the way we stopped at a Dairy Queen which everyone ordered vanilla including Mike.  When the server gave us the ice cream Mike was appalled, he wanted chocolate.  The server argued that he asked for vanilla and he agreed but he meant chocolate and seemed puzzled she couldn't read his mind.  She was sympathetic and swapped it out.

To this very day when I or a member of my family say one thing and mean another we always justify it by saying "I meant chocolate".  Thanks for the memories, you will be missed.

Pat, I am very sad to hear Mike passed away.  I, too, have great memories of the 2 of you at Baker and around Oakland Park, driving in the orange convertible, doing things we probably shoudn't have been doing about half the time.  Trips way out to Flat Rock Park were an adventure from the south end of town in  those days.  Sorry I didn't know sooner.   My love and prayers to you and the family.  Mike will be missed.  I remember at BUMS 2000 he brought his Senior Annual to get folks to sign it that he had missed 20 years earlier.  Quite a character.

If you asked him persistently, Mike would roll his stomach muscles for you.  Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Picasso, Dali (hello?) and then Smith.  Great talents the world will never see again. I look forward to sharing a laugh with you again some day.  Schmidt,  If you can, let me know if there is indeed a heaven.  In the present real estate market, I don't want to make a big investment if I don't have to.

Well, this just saddens me very much.  Mike was one of those people with a sense of humor I really appreciated.  My condolences go out to his family and friends.
