67, of 2939 Buckingham Rd. Galesburg, IL died at 7:05 AM Thursday July 11, 2002 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was born March 1, 1935 in Columbus Georgia to Richard and Susie (Robinson) McSwain. He married Margaret “Peggy” Dean on October 28, 1962 in Montgomery, AL. She survives. Also surviving is a son, Joseph D. McSwain of Galesburg, IL, a daughter, Mrs. Kevin (Theresa) Oller of Victoria, IL, a brother Leslie McSwain in Centerville, GA, a sister, Charlotte Flatt of Columbus, GA and two grandsons. He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Leslie “Dean” McSwain in 1977. He was a professor of Speech Communication at Eastern Illinois University for 27 years, retiring in 1998. He graduated from Baker High School in Columbus GA in 1952. He earned his Bachelors degree from Northern Georgia Military School. He received his Masters in Speech Communication from the University of Alabama and he received his PhD from the Florida State. He served in the Army Reserves. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Gideons. Graveside services will be 11:30 AM Monday July 15, 2002 in East Linwood Cemetery with Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Military honors will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. Memorial services will be Noon Monday at the Bethel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at their home, 2939 Buckingham Road, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday July 14, 2002. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
