In Memory

Nick Spano

Nick Spano passed away in July of 1998.  Nick taught History from 1966-70.  An avid body builder, he started the Columbus Health Club on Wynnton Rd. next to the Blue Jay Barber Shoppe.  Later he bought land on the corner of 13th Street and Wynnton Rd and open the Olympic Health Spa for men, then later opened the Olympic Health Spa for women directly behind the men's spa.  He died of an apparent heart attack.

Yes........I definately remember the Olympic Health Spa, because I was a life time member!! I sure did enjoy going there over the years and hate the fact that I paid for a life time membership $525.00 FOR LIFE, and now it ended up getting sold over to Jumbo China Chinese Restaurant & the womens spa converted into a Dialysis Clinic. My money was wasted! And no other work out club in town would honor the life time membership! What a bomber!! I heard from another reliable source who was also a BHS graduate "Chico's" taht Nick became a acholic in his older age and did die from a heart attack. So sad to find this out. I only wish his brother Ken Spano would have bought the property and atlease kept the womens spa going, since he had investment property around town. O well....you win some and loose some. Prayers that the man got his self right before he died.

I remember Mr Spano very well. He taught one of the few subjects other than ROTC which I enjoyed. I will always remember him as being fair open for discussion if you were'nt just killing time. I too bought into the Olympic Health Spa - Lifetime Membership for $525. It was a great deal, My friends and I used to go there and workout, sit in the "inhalation Room", with the menthol Eucalypsis and do the plunge into the friggid "Polar Dip", then play volleyball. The place had a real nice Smoothie Bar, and for membership you also received 1 pair of Summer (shorts & tee shirt), and 1 Winter Sweat suit. Mr Spano was there on many occasions I went and would invite me and my friends for after hours parties with mixed drinks at the bar and everything was available to us. He will always be one of my most liked teachers during that time.

I am truly sorry for your loss and hope my short remembrance of him can bring some comfort to you in knowing the person I was fortunate enough to have met..
