Thomas Clifton Sowell, 74, of Fortson, Georgia passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022 at his home.

Thomas was born May 6, 1947 in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late Margie Bell Sowell and Julius Curtis Sowell. He was an army brat growing up having spent time in Germany twice playing basketball and soaking in the history and culture of the area. His love for the military led to his enlistment in the United States Air Force of which is one of his most cherished accomplishments. He loved history, especially military history. Vacations consisted of going places where museums and military ships were to be found, such as the National Infantry Museum at Ft. Benning and the USS Alabama in Mobile.

Tom fell in love and married his high school sweetheart Linda Stewart Sowell and together they were blessed with 56 years of marriage and a wonderful daughter and beloved grandchildren. He was a devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church in Fortson since June of 1982. He and his wife taught Sunday School from youth to adults. Mr. Sowell served as a Deacon, drove the church bus for youth trips and adult trips, ran the sound system, and helped rebuild the church after a fire in 1985. Needless to say he served his church well and adored his church family. He was also a member of the Patriot Guard Riders and in his younger years he raced corvettes. He was a man of many accomplishments and he lived life to the fullest.

He retired as a supervisor from Lucent Technologies after over 30 years of dedicated service. He then began working with the Harris County School System as a bus driver, substitute teacher, paraprofessional to a special needs child and routing assistant to the transportation departmnt retiring with 10 years of service. He enjoyed his time watching the children grow and ensuring their safe transportation. In his spare time, his favorite past-time was watching sports on TV and spending time with beloved family. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; sisters, Patricia Ann Bunnell and Bonnie Jean Williams; and golden retriever, Scarlett and Cocker Spaniel, Mati.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sowell; daughter, Crystal (Seth) Johnson; grandchildren, Duncan Johnson and Maci Johnson all of Fortson; uncle, Jim (Sandy) Sowell of Heath Springs, SC; and several aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins and his Antioch Baptist Church family.

An open casket visitation will be held 6-8 pm on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Cox Funeral Home in Hamilton, GA.

A memorial service will be held 2 pm on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Antioch Baptist Church in Fortson with Rev. Gary Hartman officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church. His remains will be interred in the church cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Antioch Baptist Church.

An exemplary life & an exemplary individual. Tom was a lotta fun to be around at Baker and just loved people. I remember the night we had got caught trespassing at the old haunted house in phenix city and were escorted by the police to Opelika. He will be missed by many.

Thank you all for your sweet words & condolences. Tom was only at Baker for half of his senior year. In spite of that, he loved it and his Baker family. We met at a sock hop after a basketball game on January 22, 1965 & were never apart until March 26, 2022 when he went to his Heavenly home. I miss him more than words can say. If you are still blessed enough to have your spouse, go give them a kiss & tell them that you love them.
Linda
