Leonard Jones - Class Of 1952

Leonard Floyd Jones BHS 1952

Leonard Floyd Jones, 83, died April 7, 2018 at Seasons Hospice of complications from Alzheimer’s. Born April 21, 1934, in Columbus, GA, he graduated from Baker High School and Troy State University, where he played varsity football. After graduation, he taught and coached at Swainsboro High School and then moved to Atlanta to begin a distinguished, stellar career with the Fulton County Schools, starting as a physical education teacher and football coach at Russell High School in East Point. In 1963, he transferred to North Springs High School where his 1969 football team won the state AA championship. Leonard began his administrative career in 1971 as the first principal of Riverwood High School, a new Fulton County school in Sandy Springs. In his fifteen years there, he earned a solid reputation as a firm, fair, enlightened, and progressive administrator who supported his teachers; expected the best from both students and faculty; and welcomed parent involvement. In return, his teachers worshipped him; students at all levels received exemplary instruction; and parents bought homes in the Riverwood district because of his leadership. In 1986, he was named executive director for high Schools, supervising the system’s high school principals. He retired in 1990 but was called back twice, to serve as interim principal at Roswell High School and as athletic director for the school system. In his 70’s Leonard relished serving as a community coach for the Chattahoochee High School football team, working as the offensive coordinator.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbaree; his son, Michael; his daughter, Pamela; and his sisters, Marietta Tomlin (Fred) and Judy Rebecca Phillips (John).

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 19, at 2:00, at Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, with visitation at 1:00 in the Bagley House, next to the church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346-1910; or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard Blvd, SW, Atlanta, GA 30315

One of the really good guys. Great athlete, even greater person. It's been nearly 66 years since we graduated from Baker in 1952, but I'll always remember him.
