Baker Band of 1966 sent by Joe Bacchus '67

This photo of the Baker Band 1966 was sent to me by Jim Hooker ’70. The Baker Band was a group of musicians, Dandy Lions and Majorettes sharing hard work and fun. John Grantham made sure we were prepared to perform our best and that we had some fun along the way. Somewhere there is a book about music in the schools of Columbus and Baker High was the first school band in the area. Research on this subject was in progress several years ago and the local newspaper was involved.

Thanks Paula Gross Lamm (Class of 74) for sharing the memories below:

My most memorable was the fire that destroyed BHS's auditorium. Below is a photo copy of the newspaper article I have in my scrap book. Unfortunately I don't have the date of the fire but it was in the early 1970's. I remember standing across the street watching as the roof of the auditorium collapsed. The cars parked along the road side were too hot to even touch.

I sent photos of just a few momentums I have saved over the years. I was greatly sadden to see that Kevin McDonough has left us. I have several newspaper articles on his successes made while at BHS as well as others. I hope you enjoy looking back at them as much as I do.

Just a few more photos below I thought someone might like to take a look at. Lions Roar was the school's newspaper at that time. This particular edition was dated: Vol. 1, XXVII.  The next is a newspaper article about 9 BHS players being chosen for the ALL-BI-CITY Football team. Finally an article about Kevin McDonough decision to go to NE Louisiana.

Linda Viselli being crowned Miss Junior Optimist.

The above is an article in the school's newspaper regarding LeBrenda Wilson, sister of Linda Wilson, both BHS students.

This photo is of that particular year's Dandy Lion Drill Team. Maybe someone will recognize  a few of the faces.

BJ Mills, '72: The picture of the Dandylion Drill Team is from 1971. Cindy Adams is in the middle of the front row (in the white jumper) and I can name a few of the rest of the ladies.

(L to R - front row seated) Gina Perkins, can't remember, me, Cindy, Connie Nelson, Ann Bennett, Linda Sharpe, Ana Blanco. (next Row - kneeling) can't remember, Leslie Wright, Nellie Reeves, Third from the right is Ava Brooks, can't remember the rest (3rd row - standing) Karen Staley, Robin Levitt, can't rem, Pam Hurston, Pam Martin, Carol Rollings, can't rem, Connie Wright....

Not bad for no year book. I was on the annual staff and that picture didn't make it because they cut off part of the drill team...the other one is in the year book. Maybe some one else can remember ALL the names...

Above is a photo of Debbie Snelling, a Baker Graduate who was named Miss Columbus, Georgia. Debbie graduated with the Class of 70'.

Newspaper article of the Coach of the Year and two BHS players honored at the Exchange Banquet.  The students are Dale Williams and Gary Kern.

Lastly (and I hope Donna does not kill me) is a good friend of mine during that time - Donna Cauthen. The photo was taken in front of my brother's Dodge Challenger at Battle Park either in 1970 or 71.

The above photo is at a going away party that my friends gave me right before we moved from Fort Benning after my father retired in June of 72'. From top row L to R: Terri Hancock, I think Marie Jones, Me-Paula Gross, Gloria Watley and I think Faye Beasley in curlers. All from the Class of 74'.

BHS football team at it's opening game against Hardway on September 5th. We won 26-14!

Tommy Wilson, Class of 71'. He was injured while working at a summer job and missed the beginning of the football season in traction.

Raffle ticket stub I saved. The Sigma Delta Beta Sorority was selling raffle tickets for a $25 Gift Certificate to the Traffic Circle Shopping Center. Apparently I did not win because no one ever called! Hope everyone enjoys looking back. ~ Paula '74
