Emily Louise Harwell Hutchens, 72, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on January 14, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family.
A private graveside service was held on January 16, 2021 at Parkhill Cemetery. The service was streamed through Facebook at: Striffler-Hamby Mortuary at Parkhill Cemetery Facebook page, the service was saved and is available to be watched.
Emily was born on November 12, 1948 in Waltham, Massachusetts; the daughter of Emily Slocumb Harwell and Edward Harwell. She was a graduate of Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia. She married Larry Hutchens in 1969. They were married for 49 years. Before retiring, Emily worked for Synovus-CB&T as a bank teller where many customers became her friends. Emily was a faithful member of Edgewood Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia where she was a Sunday School teacher for kindergarten and first grade for many years. She was one to get involved and loved volunteering in various civic groups, including the Columbus Christian Women's Club, Castlewood Garden Club, an Elections Branch Manager, St. Francis Auxiliary Cheer Cart and a Girl Scout Leader. Emily was a loving and enthusiastic wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Emily enjoyed planning trips and traveling with family and friends having visited 47 of 50 states and 5 out of the 7 continents. She also enjoyed outdoor gardening, visiting gardens in her many travels and raising a diverse home garden.
She leaves her loving legacy to be cherished by her children, Bruce (Angela) Hutchens and Amy Gaylor, her grandchildren, Hannah Hutchens, Matthew Hutchens, Katie (Paul) McClung, Claire Gaylor, and great grandson, Alexander McClung. She cherished her many friends and never met a stranger.

I've known Emily since we were kids.She was always so vibrant and energetic.Baker has lost a lot of Lions from the South Columbus area.

I did know Emily a little in high school, because she did sign my annual.  I don't think we were that close of friends and of course lost touch after high school, but am very sad to hear of her passing at such a young age.  We all hope to live to be 100, but that is only in God's hands and it seems that God wanted her at 72.  My prayers are with her family.
