Anet 345 - One landmark near Ft. Benning goes up in 2011 ... another comes down .....

Jonnie Melillo Clasen - Anet editor since November 2009

Editor's Note: Thank you to John Helms, public affairs photographer at Ft. Benning, for the impressive image of the new "Fort Benning Gateway" in south Columbus.  The "Gateway" joins the National Infantry Museum as draws to south Columbus. Revitalization of south Columbus, which probably has one of the highest concentrations of WW II veterans in the nation, is a top priority with the current city administration.  And thank you to all the Baker High School graduates who emailed to let us know you are a Ranger, alongwith Baker graduates who told us your father or grandfather is a Ranger and to graduates who responded with other Ranger family connections. Our informal request for Baker High graduates with Ranger connections was by word-of-mouth and the Baker website. I'm sure there are more of you out there, and I apologize if your name isn't included. The numbers following names of Baker students are their graduation years -- NOT their ages. Thank you for the biographical information and photos some of you shared.  We learned that two Baker graduates who are Rangers are also West Point graduates, Thomas "Tom" M. Schroeder and Steven Guthrie. (Note Added: Also, Baker graduate Ranger: Victor Aviles). Several Baker faculty members were West Point graduates. The father, Kenneth Walter Hall, of Baker graduate Carolyn Hall Tidd is a 1950 West Point graduate.  Hall, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968, was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for Valor.  Baker graduate and Ranger Hall of Fame inductee "Dick" Stewart, who died last year, left his legs in Vietnam.  Unfortunately space limitations prevented us from listing the many honors earned by Rangers in this Anet. Some names listed below are of deceased individuals, however some of the Rangers mentioned in this Anet are still "leading the way" in their 90s.
